“Short Story for Making Masks, Dance Masks”

“This is picture of eskimo making dance wooden masks out of wood stumps, for use at eskimo pot-latch dance, one nearest to man is called old women of the north when they are finished some of them will be painted with clay or regular paint some masks like these imitate animals different kind of animals and all have different and of meaning. And during this kid of Eskimo dance, called Pot-Latch dance everyone is invited even the whole village is invited children and everyone, food for all is always ready most eskimos or natives of yukon have houses like this in the picture it is like my house too, but right now most Eskimo have Alaska housing all over with oil and wood stoves. “Short Story for Making Snow Shoes”

“This picture shows an Eskimo making snowshoes in his summer camp his Eskimo wife is getting ready for lunch of boiled white fish. Making snowshoes some time in August or Sept. is just right time for the worker he can bend them and have them drying at least month or more after they are dry they will be real hard and light Eskimos look for right kind of birch wood in the fall while there easy to cut. He uses his teeth to soften the front ends back and forth like those already hanging. Also notice some drying seal meat hang above his old women some pike fish too. Preparing a meal, this Eskimo will trade these snowshoes for food or seal oil or anything he does not have. Also notice there summer tent they live in tents all summer until weather turns cold then they go back to the village, picture back ground is Yukon River. This short story is Eskimo of Yukon River. “Short Story for Eskimo Village”

“This picture is eskimo village shown good view with children playing sliding down the river bank of in a village of north Yukon River, only several miles from Hamilton, Alaska and a man fishing for tom-cods very very much good for for north Eskimos not only for them us including me of course with seal oil. Notice Eskimo women getting some tom-cods with her basket. Notice some boats too, events 50 or 60 below zero children never stay in house because they wear young fur skins for clothing. Even here in Yukon River when the temperature gets to 50 below no cloth can keep anyone warm while the wind is 35 miles an hour with foot or foot an a half high snow drifting. Milo Minock

Milo Minock was born on the Lower Yukon, and has spent most of his life in the Village of Pilot Station. Although his work is relatively unknown in the outside world, he is an artist of stature among the people of the Kuskokwim-Lower Yukon Delta. During the more than thirty years that he has been working, Milo has produced a voluminous number of works ranging from pen drawings, as shown in this book, to skin paintings. Milo’s feeling for the Yupik Eskimo, his people, come through in each one of his works, depicting the warmth and hardship of day-to-day life on Alaska’s two largest rivers. The stories in this book, have been reproduced, untouched, in Milo’s own hand to give the reader a feeling of the man himself.
